Ewes at Green Cross

Flock BL19G was founded at Braidwood, Lanarkshire with females from Myreton, Sandy Knowe and Pretts Mill.  The aim was to produce big correct rams to go on the local Cheviot and Blackface breeds producing the Half-bred and Grey-face commercial ewe.

In the following years lambs were also bred for sale at Lanark - an important centre for pedigree Border Leicesters.  To introduce early maturity and style we purchased many influential sires from the Howies of Hillend, Morwick and Acklington Park and also from Glenside and Elsrickle Mains.

Particular attention has always been paid to breeding sound sheep with good length - correct mouths and feet with that extra bit of character.  Show successes followed, at first locally and then at the English Royal Show and The Royal Welsh.  However, satisfied customers were our most valued rewards.

In 1954 the flock moved south to Surrey.  We started selling rams in Wales and later at the big NSA Builth Wells Ram Sales. The Welsh half-bred (the Border Leicester on the Welsh Mountain ewe) was hugely popular at that time.

Recently our rams have been selling in the south to use on Texel and Suffolk-cross ewes where they give a growthy lamb and useful crossbred breeding females.

These shearling ewes in full wool were local winners

The Border Leicester does well at local shows where it has to compete in interbreed classes.  There are few pedigree flocks in our area but the shows are a good “shop window”.
